This year’s Amazon Prime Day is on Tuesday, July 12. The online retailer boasts Prime Day as its biggest sales event of the year, promising more than 100,000 deals worldwide exclusively to Amazon Prime members. U.S. members can shop starting at midnight PT at amazon.com/primeday.
While last year’s inaugural Prime Day event was a bit of a dud, inciting hashtags like #PrimeDayFail, Amazon says they’ve doubled their inventory for many deals for this year’s event so members can shop for deals across almost all Amazon categories. TVs and toys will be the hot-ticket items this year, but shoppers can find deals on a slew of other items, from headphones to slow cookers to vitamins. This year’s event also features twice as many small business sellers from around the world.
Not an Amazon Prime Member Yet?
Prime Day is open to Amazon Prime members only, but that also includes free trial members, invited guests of other members, Prime Fresh members, Amazon Family, and Amazon Student members. If you want access to this year’s Prime Day deals, make sure you sign up for a 30-day free trial.
Amazon Prime is $10.99 per month or $99 per year depending on what plan you choose. Benefits of being an Amazon Prime member include:

Amazon Prime Day Deals
Spotlight Deals are the best Amazon Prime Day deals. They feature deep discounts on top brands and popular items, but they’re only be available while supplies last, so you have to snag these up before they’re out of stock.
True to their name, Lightning Deals are here and gone in a flash, and on Prime Day, they’ll only be available to Prime members. These deals are only available for a few hours or until they sell out, whichever comes first. You’ll know if a Lightning Deal is still available by the status bar showing the percentage of items claimed by others and a timer indicating how much longer you have to claim the deal. Here are two ways to up your Lightning Deal game:
- If you miss out, you can set up a reminder for an upcoming Lightning Deal through the Amazon mobile app
- If an item is 100% claimed by others and there’s a spot open on the waiting list, you can sign up for the waiting list by clicking “Join Waitlist” to be notified through the Amazon mobile app if the item becomes available again
Prime Savings & Deals
These deals are available all day on Prime Day. Just go to the Prime Day Deals page to see what discounts are available. You need to click “See Details” to view the discount amount, and the discount will be applied on the check-out page.
Do you own an Amazon Echo, Echo Dot or Amazon Tap? Ask Alexa: “Alexa, what are your Prime Day deals?” to get exclusive deals on products you order using your Alexa device, including Amazon devices, smart home products, toys and more. Now through Prime Day, Prime members can get $10 off their first purchase on an eligible order over $20 when they shop through their Alexa device. You can also access these Alexa-only deals now through Prime Day:
- “Alexa, order a drone” to get a Dromida Kodo UAV Quadcopter for $25 (38% off through July 12 or while supplies last)
- “Alexa, order a griddler” and get a Cuisinart 5-in-1 Griddler for $40 (47% off through July 12 or while supplies last)
- “Alexa, order an Amazon Tap” and get an Amazon Tap for $79 (39% off today only while supplies last)
If these aren’t the deals you’re looking for, just ask Alexa to order a product for you, and Alexa will find a deal on a matching product that ships with Prime. To shop through Alexa, you must be a Prime member and have one-click shopping enabled.
Ways to Save on Prime Day
Amazon Mobile App
Get deals before they’re gone by setting up alerts for your Watched and Waitlisted Deals on the Amazon mobile app. If you want to know if an item you’ve had your eye on becomes a Lightning Deal, add it to one of your public lists, then go to your app notifications and make sure you give Amazon permission to send you notifications, then turn on your recommendations. If an item on your public list become a Lightning Deal, you’ll get a notification on your smartphone.
Amazon Prime Facebook Event
Join the Amazon Prime Day Facebook event to get Prime Day tips, exclusive deals, giveaways, news, deal information, and other exclusive content. Amazon is calling the event your “one-stop Prime Day shop.”
Prime Now is Amazon’s super-fast delivery service, and it has grown in availability to more than 40 cities worldwide. Now through Prime Day, members have access to Prime Now-exclusive deals, and members who place their first Prime Now order during that timeframe can use code 10PRIMENOW to get $10 off that order and $10 off a Prime Now order placed July 13-31.
Prime Day Amazon.com Rewards Visa Credit Card Offer
On Prime Day, save $30 on your purchase of $150 or more on items shipped and sold by Amazon when you pay using the Amazon.com Rewards Visa Card and use the code VISA30. Current Visa Rewards Card members are automatically eligible for this offer, as well as card members who applied and were approved by July 9.

Another really great resource for price comparison is camelcamelcamel, a free Amazon price tracker. If you can risk a deal being claimed too quickly, try to price check here before buying. Download their Chrome extension for faster price checks.

Running now through Prime Day, Amazon customers can listen to select playlists on Prime Music for a chance to win one of 12 experiences with top artists, including Carrie Underwood, Blink-182, Norah Jones, Flo Rida, The Lumineers, Pentatonix, and more. The experience includes airfare, hotel stay, tickets to a concernt, and a meet-and-greet with the artist.

The Amazon original show The Grand Tour is coming to the U.S. in the fall of 2016, and you can win a spot in the studio audience. U.S. Prime members can save up to 40% on a Kindle Unlimited membership on Prime Day. Kindle Unlimited members have access to more than one million book titles on any device.
Deals from Other Retailers
Last year, many other retailers, such as Walmart, Best Buy and Target, offered their own sales in response to Amazon Prime Day. While Target and Jet.com have announced they will not offer any competing sales this year, other retailers are starting to promote special sales that will be held at the same time as Prime Day. These are the competing sales we’ve found so far:
Walmart Dare to Compare Sale
Walmart has launched its Dare to Compare sale in response to Amazon Prime Day. Not only will you find Rollbacks on major categories, such as toys, electronics and video games, but Walmart price checks with Amazon to ensure Walmart is offering the same or lower prices than Amazon. You’ll even see the Amazon price below every item. Walmart has also eliminated its free shipping minimum starting Monday, July 11, through Friday, July 15.
If you want free shipping year-round from Walmart, the retailer is offering a free 30-day trial for its ShippingPass service, which offers free unlimited two-day shipping to members.
Best Buy “Deals for All”
Best Buy’s answer to this year’s Prime Day is “Deals for All. No Membership Required,” which features deals in every department. Discounts include 20% off select HDTVs, up to 40% off major appliances, and discounts on iPhones, laptops, streaming devices and more.
Ebags, which also sells on Amazon’s marketplace, will offer up to 85% off select items on Prime Day. You can shop for purses, handbags, luggage, accessories and more through the online retailer.
eBay “Summer of Choice” Deals
Today eBay is continuing its “Summer of Choice” deals with discounts of up to 70% off on trending tech items.
Forever 21 “Black Friday in July” Sale
Forever 21’s Black Friday in July Sale is online only and runs Sunday through Tuesday, July 10-12. Shop clearances on fashion apparel and accessories prices of up to 70% off.
J.C. Penney “Penney Palooza”
The Penney Palooza sale is Monday and Tuesday, July 11-12. Online shoppers can get free shipping on orders of $49 or more, which is lower than J.C. Penney’s usual $99 free shipping threshold. Shoppers will also find online-only deals on both private and national brands.
Kohl’s Daily Deals
Kohl’s will offer daily “Beat the Heat Buys” Sunday through Thursday, July 10-14, both online and in-store. Deals will be upwards of 50-60% off and will focus on active apparel, footwear, summer essentials and home goods.
Macy’s “Black Friday in July” Sale
Macy’s has launched its Black Friday in July sale one day early this year. Deals are available online only starting July 12, and there’s no minimum purchase to get free shipping. Shop for deals from 40-70% off select departments, such as swimwear, dresses, designer handbags, cosmetics, fragrances, baby and kids’ clothing and more. You can also take an extra 25% off your entire order with code BFJULY. Deals will be available both in-store and online Wednesday through Sunday, July 13-17.
Newegg Fantastech Sale
Newegg is offering what the online retailer is calling some of its best deals of the year during its Fantastech Sale starting Monday, July 11. The sale includes deals on PCs, laptops, computer components, peripherals, other electronics, home items, and tools. It’s not clear how long this sale will be offered.
Sears 4th of July Sales Extended
Sears has extended its 4th of July Savings with up to 35% off appliances, including refrigerators and washers and dryers. The home retailer is also offering up to 25% off Craftsman tools. If you’re looking for back-to-school deals, Sears is offering 40% off Dockers uniforms for kids and up to 50% off back-to-school fashions for kids.
Toys “R” Us
Toys “R” Us is hosting a Super Brands Sale Monday through Thursday, July 11-14, featuring discounts on your kids’ favorite brands, including Marvel, LEGO, Disney Infinity, Hot Wheels and Nerf.
